Lawyer is found dead in his basement. Resident of Gering Valley since the earliest days of settlement and prominent in many ways. George W. Lawyer sent a bullet into his own brain at an early hour on Wednesday morning, the act evidently having been deliberately planned. Mr. Lawyer has been an employe at the sugar factory, and was in the custom of arising and getting his own breakfast. When his wife arose at about eight o'clock she found a note on the kitchen table telling her to 'look in the basement'. She summoned neighbors first and they found Mr. Lawyer's body seated on the floor of the basement leaning back against the wall, a bullet hole in his temple and a 22-cal. revolver lying on the floor. There was no question as to the act being purposed, as another note was found giving certain personal instructions, and checks made covering various expenses which would follow death. In addition, Mr. Lawyer had drawn his pay at the factory up to the previous night, although not yet payday, and just a few days previous had purchased a new suit of clothes. He bought the weapon the previous evening also. No doubt is felt that the business reverses in connection with a bank failure several years ago had preyed on his mind, and brooding over his trouble had led to a disturbed state of mind which prompted him to end his life. No man in the valley was more respected than George Lawyer. He was scrupulously honorable, and was in his long residence here held in such high regard that his fellow citizens had made use of him in many public capacities. He had served as county commissioner, as canal director, as a school board member and was active in numerous other public affairs. Coming to the valley in 1886, the intervening years had served to make him one of the best known residents of the valley, and universal sorrow is felt because of the sad termination of his career. ---George W. Lawyer was a native of Iowa, where he was born in 1862. With his wife, who was Miss Estella Basin (Bason), they located a few miles south-east of where Gering now stands and until a few years ago had made their home there. In addition to the wife he leaves four children, Mrs. Verna Goldsborough, and Elgin Lawyer, who reside in Pasadena, California; Manley M. of Bayard and Roland D. of Des Moines, Iowa, and six brothers and sisters, Edgar H. of Rock Island, Ill., Mrs Alice N. Leach and Mrs. Ollie E. Siebold, each of Lantry, S. D., Oscar L., Anaconda, Mont., Clyde R. of Buffalo, Wyo., and Mrs. Ora Hawley of Gering. Arrangements for funeral services have not been completed at this writing, pending information as to how many of his children and other relatives will be able to attend. His brothers, Clyde and Oscar and his sister Mrs. Seibold are expected, and his sons, Roland and Elgin, are also enroute here. ### Gering Courier -front page- November 19, 1926 ================= siblings: George W.
