Description	:	Indian Fighter McAnulty Dies Left His Homestead to Become Soldier. Taylor, Neb., Jan. 26 - George W. McAnulty, 87, who helped wrest Nebraska's prairies from the Indians 60 years ago, died last night at the home of a daughter at Lusk, Wyo. Homesteading near the present town of Burwell in 1873, McAnulty fought Indians, first with his scattered neighbors and later as a U. S. Infantryman at Fort Hartsuff, which he helped secure through congressional action in 1874. Homesteading near the present town of Burwell in 1873, McAnulty fought Indians, first with his scattered neighbors and later as a U. S. Infantryman at Fort Hartsuff, which he helped secure through congressional action in 1874. His company, under Captain Samuel Munson, helped quell Indian uprisings in western Nebraska, Wyoming and the Black Hills country. He was married in 1880 and resided for many years in Scotia, Neb., where his wife was buried in 1934. A native of Latrobe, Pa., McAnulty was left an orphan when a small boy. His guardian was Isaac Pershing, an uncle of General John J. Pershing. At 18, he worked his way to Brownsville, Tex., by way of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, later drove longhorns over the famous Chisholm trail to Dodge City, Kans. From his cabin near Burwell he saw the Sioux Indians sack the Richard McClimans and other cabins across the North Loup river, joined other settlers in pursuing and attacking the Indians the next day on Pebble creek.
