Description	:	George W. Meredith, a life long resident of Van Buren Co., and for many years a resident of Bonaparte, died at his home in this city Thursday, Dec. 17, 1903. Mr. Meredith had been inpoor health for several years and about three weeks ago suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never rallied. Meredith, a life long resident of Van Buren Co., and for many years a resident of Bonaparte, died at his home in this city Thursday, Dec. 17, 1903. Mr. Meredith had been inpoor health for several years and about three weeks ago suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never rallied. He was a great sufferer during his illness and death came as a welcome release. Geo. W. Meredith was born in Bentonsport, Iowa, Oct. 4, 1838. He grew to manhood there. At the outbreak of the civil war he became anxious to serve his country by actively participating in its struggles against rebellion. He was mustered into service at Keokuk, Iowa, in March, 1862, as Corporal of Company I, 19th Iowa Infantry. He took part in many engagements; was in the seige of Vicksburg, was wounded, taken prisoner and for ten months endured the prison life at Tyler, Texas. He was finally exhanged and came home on a furlough. He returned to the front and was in the battle a Spanish Fort near Mobile. He gave three years of his life to his country receiving honorable discharge at Davenport, Iowa, in August, 1865. His record as a soldier stands preeminent for bravery and courage. His love for his country was one of his strongest characteristics and his associations with his comrades who wore the blue were to him most enjoyable. Mr. Meredith returned to Bentonsport and in September, 1865, was married Miss Mary Robb, daughter of the late Harvey Robb. They settled on a farm south of Vernon and lived there many years, afterwards moving to Vernon where they made their home until the death of Mrs. Meredith. Two children were born to them, Clyde who died in infancy and Harvey who died when eighteen. Mr. Meredith was married in 1892 to Miss Anna Rehkopf, who is left to mourn his death. They had one child, a little son, who lived but a few days. Mr. Meredith united with the M.E. church in Vernon in 1893 and remained a devoted member of that organization ever afterwards. He was also a member of Vernon Post G.A.R. and many of his old comrades attended the funeral Sunday morning in the M.E. church, this city, Rev. Chas. Erskine, the pastor, delivering the sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the Bentonsport cemetery in the presence of a large concourse of his old friends and neighbors. Source: Van Buren Co.
