W. Shields, age 75, a former resident of Norden, passed away at his home in Osceola, Iowa, Sunday, March 1st. Mr. Shields, the father of Joe M. Shields of Norden, came to Keya Paha county in 1904, and lived here until 1922, when he moved to Iowa. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the U. S. Fullerton home near Sparks. ____________________ SPRINGVIEW HERALD Thursday March 12, 1942 Springview Keya Paha County Nebraska Obituary Of Geo. Shields Of Iowa George W. Shileds, son of Joseph H. C. and Catherine Coon Shields was born December 14, 1866, on a farm near Hopeville in Clark County, Iowa. Departing this life March 1, 1942, at the age of 75 years, 2 months, and 17 days. He came to Nebraska in 1885 at the age of 19 years and in 1889 moved to Vermillion, South Dakota. Here on September 25, 1892, he was married to Sarah Munson. To this union two children were born, Joseph M. of Norden and Olena Catherine, who died in infancy. His wife passed away March 29, 1904 and George, with his son, Joe returned to keya Paha County, where he took up a homestead and lived for several years. In 1922 he returned to the parental home near Hopeville, Iowa, to live with his mother and brother, LeRoy. There he had the pleasant privilege of repaying some of the debt he owned to a noble woman who in the prime of her young woman hood had entered the home to become a loving mother to five small orphaned children of whom he was one. Following her death the home was maintained through the devotion of another noble woman. Mrs. Isabelle Reeves, who had been a member of the household for several years. In the spring of 1940, owing to infirmity of age, the old home was broken up. Mrs. Isabelle Reeves, wnet to live with her sons and George established his home in Osceola, Iowa, where after a brief illness the end came peacefully Sunday morning, March 1, 1942. He leaves to mourn his passing the son, Joseph M., with his wife Dora, and their five children, and his brother, LeRoy of Grand River, Iowa, and his sister, Mary Fullerton of Sparks, together with many neices and nephews as well as a host of friends. George was a devoted Christian holding membership in the Methodist Church. Interment was made at Sparks, Nebraska. The services were in charge of REV. Neal Phipps of Tuthill, South Dakota. NOTE: I came across the obituary for George Shields. I am part of the Shields family going back to the mid 1800's. I would like to mention that George Shields had one sister and two brothers that preceded him in death. Rebecca Shields Lawrence who died in 1921 in Norden, Nebraska. William Shields who died in 1938 in Clarke County, Iowa near Osceola, Iowa and John Shields who died in 1926 also in Clarke County, Iowa. I am sure that they were not mentioned in the obituary as they were already deceased. LeRoy Shields mother was from his father's second wife Frances Lawrence. The other children were from his father's first wife Catherine Coon who died in 1876 three years after the birth of her last child Mary Shields. Steve Peacock
