Description	:	George W. Waters 86, died of heart disease at his farm home south of Froid on Thursday evening, Feb. 28, 2008. George was born at Froid on Dec. 14, 1921, the son of George F. And Verna Holly Waters. He grew up in the Froid community with his lifelong sweetheart, Kathryn "Katy" Slunaker. An outstanding athlete who lettered in four sports, George set Froid High School track records that stood until the 1970s. Read More	George W. Waters 86, died of heart disease at his farm home south of Froid on Thursday evening, Feb. 28, 2008. George was born at Froid on Dec. 14, 1921, the son of George F. And Verna Holly Waters. He grew up in the Froid community with his lifelong sweetheart, Kathryn "Katy" Slunaker. An outstanding athlete who lettered in four sports, George set Froid High School track records that stood until the 1970s. He married Kathryn on Sept. 1, 1942, at Kent, Wash., and they lived in Vancouver, Wash., where George worked in a shipyard until he entered the Marine Corps. George, a proud member of "the greatest generation" served in the Pacific during World War II as a U.S. Marine. He entered the Corps on June 18, 1943, and saw action on the Marianas and Ryukus Islands and on Okinawa, and served in the occupation of Japan before he was discharged Jan. 18, 1946. He lived the proud and honorable heritage of the Corps the rest of his life. After his military service, George and Kathryn moved to the farm south of Froid, where they have lived since. Agriculture and the cycle of life on the farm formed the foundation of George and Kathryn's life, with their family the center of his life. Hunting and fishing at every opportunity, George loved outdoor activities of all kinds, and loved to share them with his family and with future generations as a Montana hunter safety instructor. He was a dedicated member of the Froid Congregational Church, active in every community activity that came along, and served on the board of the Farmers Elevator, and the Froid Schools and was the chairman of the board of directors of his sons! He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A big man with a sense of joy to match, the twinkle in his eye might warn you of his sense of humor, and his booming laugh put even the victims of his jokes at ease! George is survived by his wife, Kathryn; and six children and their families, George and his wife Lucille of Missoula, Patrick and his wife Judy of Froid, Mike and his wife Linda of Homestead, Gale Simonson and her husband Leroy of Loring, Sam and his wife Judy of Glasgow, and Tom of Kalispell. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several "as-good-as-kids," Cliff and Pam Torgerson, Tim and Sue Hutslar, John and Meredith Sullivan, Mike Boyarski, Harold Robinson and Gary R. Howell. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Edgar, Vernon and Francis. Cremation has taken place, with interment of cremated remains to be held at the Froid South Cemetery.
