Description	:	In 1917, George was living in Bristol, Indiana. George as a youngster attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Middlebury, Elkhart Co., Ind. until he moved to Bryan, Ohio where he joined the First English Lutheran Church. When George filled out his World War I registration card in 1917, he requested an exemption from the draft because he had a wife and three children to support. George died in a train accident. He was working two jobs at the time. During the day he worked in a bicycle repair shop and at night he was a brakeman for the local railroad. The story is that as the trains were coupling, he was caught between two cars. My father (Russ Artley) told me that when they came to tell his mother (Lillie) that her husband was dead, that Russ left the house and went to the rail yard. He didn't say much more about what happened because he started to cry and said 'that after 60 years you'd think it wouldn't bother me so much'. Source: W. Russ Artley. The Artley's house was about 1/2 block from the railroad tracks. The train hit George and didn't know it had hit him until about 65 miles later in Toledo. Vivian [George's daughter} went to the grocery store because Lillie was making her a new Easter dress. Vivian was on her way back to the house when a man on the street asked if she was George Artley's girl. She said yes, she was, and the man said how terrible it was that her father had been killed by a train. That was how and when Vivian first learned about her father's death. Source: R.
