Description	:	George Washington Brown was the eldest son of Robert J. Brown and Lydia L. Eastman. He was born in May of 1840 in Lockport, New York. At the age of 10, he was recorded in the US Census of 1850 living with his parents at Independence in Allegany County, NY. By 1860, when the US Census was taken, he was 20 years old and living in Marquette County, Wisconsin with his parents and four siblings. Brown and Lydia L. Eastman. He was born in May of 1840 in Lockport, New York. At the age of 10, he was recorded in the US Census of 1850 living with his parents at Independence in Allegany County, NY. By 1860, when the US Census was taken, he was 20 years old and living in Marquette County, Wisconsin with his parents and four siblings. In March of 1863, George enlisted as a Private in Company 'C' of the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War for a term of three years, but only served until July of 1863. Records indicate that he participated in three engagements including: the Second Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Salem Church, and most notably, at the Battle of Gettysburg. On the 15th day of February in 1864, he married Kesiah DeLano Bradley at the town of Portage in Columbia County, Wisconsin. Kesiah was six years older than George. The US Census of 1870 records George and Kesiah at Sumner Township in Fillmore County, Minnesota. They had a two year-old daughter named Mary and a two month-old daughter named Alice. Both of these daughters were born in Minnesota. Also living with them at this time was Kesiah's mother Henrietta Bradley. George listed his occupation as Farmer. At the time of the Minnesota State Census in 1875, the Brown family was still residing at Sumner Township in Fillmore County, MN. They now had four children: M.F. (Mary) age 7, Emily (Alice) age 5, B.H. (Birney) age 2, and Burtha A. age 1. By the time of the US Census in 1880, George had moved his family to Chatfield in Olmstead County, MN where he listed his occupation as being a Farmer. There was a fifth child added to their family named Charles R. who was three years of age. The 1885 South Dakota Census of Civil War Veterans indicates that George became a resident of South Dakota in March of 1882. This record also indicates that he had not been wounded during his time of service and he had not yet filed for any military pension. In 1891, George's wife Keziah passed away. She was buried at Elkton City Cemetery in Brookings County, SD. In 1895, George married his second wife Marie I. Vick. She was 33 years younger than he and by 1900 had bore him 5 children, only two of which survived at that time. Their names were Celia and Roy. The three who had perished were George E., Edith Z., and Harry Brown. Also living with George and Marie at this time was Marie's maternal grandmother Ingeborg Olson of Norway. On the same page of the 1900 US Census was George's daughter Emily Alice who had married Henry Ernest Mathews. The Brookings County Plat Book of 1897 shows that George owned 160 acres in Richland Township of Brookings County, SD. By 1901, he had doubled the size of his farm to 320 acres by purchasing the farm to the north of his, both of which were in Section 33 of Township 110N, Range 47W. George appeared in the South Dakota State Census of 1905, which was taken shortly before his death on the Eve of the New Year. He listed his occupation as being a Veterinarian. He had left his farm and was living in the city of Elkton, not far from where his farm had been. In 1906, George's widow Marie filed for his Civil War Pension. The US Census of 1910 reveals that shortly after George's death, Marie married a gentleman by the name of Lang with whom she had two children at that time. Also living with her were her four children with George W. Brown: Celia, Roy, Robert and Raymond. The known children of George W. Brown and Kesiah D.L. Bradley: Mary F.
