Collins peacefully passed away at his home in Skidmore, Tuesday evening at 4:30 o'clock, aged 89 years, 6 months and 12 days. On January 22, 1910, he fell on the ice fracturing his hip, and from this injury he never recovered. Other complications, on account of his extreme age, set in and from that time until his demise he has been a constant care to his family, relatives and friends. Two days before the end, he sank into a stupor of quietness and calmly breathed his life away. G. W. Collins was born in Rockinham county, North Carolina, June 6, 1821. When 15 years old he moved with his parents to Hart County Kentucky, where he was reared to manhood and lived until the spring of '71, when he moved with his family to Quitman, Missouri. Here he leased one half of section 15, which he farmed for several years, afterwards buying 80 acres of this farm which he cultivated until four years ago when he again moved to Quitman where he lived until a little over one year ago when he purchased and moved into the residence in Skidmore where he died. Mr. Collins was married three times. His third wife survives him, besides his wife he leaves two sons, J. C. Collins, Geo. W. Collins of Skidmore and two daughters, Mrs. F. M. Kelley, Ash Grove, Mo. and Mrs. J. W. Hensley, Hart County, Ky. The funeral services took place in the Christian church, Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m., conducted by Elder S. D. Harlan. Burial in the Masonic cemetery." From the Skidmore New Era, December 22, 1910, page 4: "Obituary George Washington Collins was born in Rockinham county, North Carolina, June 6th, 1821 and passed into larger life from his home at Skidmore, Mo., December 13th, 1910, aged 89 years 6 months and 12 days. When eleven years of age he came with his parents to Hart County, Kentucky, where he lived till the spring of 1871 when he came to Nodaway county, Missouri, and located on a farm west of Quitman, where he resided till 1894, then moving to town and a little over a year ago moved to Skidmore where he lived until he went home to glory. In 1842 he was married to Marguret A. Harlow, and to this union four children were born, two have entered the great beyond, while Mrs. Fannie Kelley of Ash Grove, Mo., and Hester A. Hensley of Monroe, Kentucky, are still living. In July 1849 Sister Collins died. In 1850 he married Catherine Tosh, and five children were born to them, three having died. Jep and George, whom we are well acquainted with, reside near Skidmore, Mo. December 17th, 1863, he was married to Miss E. D. Garnett, of Hart Co., Kentucky and to them a son was born who died in infancy, the widow is still living. At 21 years of age Mr. Collins united with the Christian Church in Woodsonville, Ky. He was a great Bible student, and possessing a great intellect, he committed large portions of the word to memory. In about 1842 he joined the Mason's and was a faithful member till poor health kept him from the meetings. January 22nd of the present year he fell and injured his hip, and has been kept close to his bed, enduring much suffering, very patiently, until death set him free to go and live in 'mansions not made with hands.' The widow and children have the sympathy of their many friends. The funeral services were conducted by his Minister, Elder Harlan, December 14th in Skidmore, at the Christian church, and the body was laid to rest in the Masonic Cemetery."
