Franklin, proprietor of the Baker Hotel, New Sharon, has lost one of its valued business men. Mr. Franklin has been in failing health for some time, but not until recently has his condition become serious. He had suffered from a heart ailment which caused his death. Although a resident of New Sharon only three years, he had won a large number of friends with his quiet manner and desire to be of service. George Washington Franklin was born at Davis City, Iowa, February 14, 1868, and passed away at his home in New Sharon, Iowa, October 15, 1934, in his 67 year He was united in marriage with Alice L. Doss on October 25, 1891. To this union were born four children: S. Eugene; Elmer W., who died in 1921; Mary E. Abernathy and Thelma R. Peterson, all of New Sharon. The children with the wife and six grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Markley, two brothers Jesse C. and John Franklin, mourn his passing. Mr. Franklin has been in the hotel business at Humeston, Iowa, for many years. In October 1931, Mr. Franklin with his family moved to New Sharon where he has been the genial and kindly host of the Baker hotel. In his quiet and pleasant way he had made many friends among the traveling public who will miss him. He was a member of the Masonic order, the Odd Fellows, and the Modern Woodsmen of America. Funeral services were held at the home in New Sharon on Wednesday morning in charge of Rev. George Blagg, assisted by a quartette consisting of Messrs. Taylor, Sheridan, Venable and Pettis. The hymns were sung by them, accompanied by Miss May McVay at the piano. The Masons had charge of the closing service. After the service the body was taken to Pleasanton in Decatur county, where it was laid to rest amid the scenes of his youth and later manhood.
