Description	:	Not much is known about George Washington Gardner's childhood. He was born 16 Apr 1810 in Canaan, Somerset County, Maine, the son of David & Lydia (Burrill) Gardner. Read More	Not much is known about George Washington Gardner's childhood. He was born 16 Apr 1810 in Canaan, Somerset County, Maine, the son of David & Lydia (Burrill) Gardner. He appears on the 1810 U.S. Census as a son under the age of 10 - he would have been approximately 2 months old at the time of the census. The census lists 3 daughters under the age of 10, but no more information is known about these children. George 'disappears' in the Census records after 1810 and doesn't reappear until 1840, when he is found in Brooks, Waldo County, Maine. He is married with one child, a son under the age of 5. Also living with the family is a Male that is between the ages of 70-79 years and a female between the ages of 50-59 years. The female is believed to be his mother, Lydia (Burrill) Gardner. It is unknown at this time if this was before or after her 2nd marriage. At this time George is making his living as a Carpenter and Cabinet Maker. By 1850, the Gardner family consisted of George, Tabitha and four of their children. George's mother Lydia is still living with the family. The 1860 U.S. Census shows the complete family, George, Tabitha and their six children: Enoch R., John H., Nellie Orend, Hannah L. Lydia A. and Abby E (a 4 month old female, actually believed to be Ernest Leslie, a 4 month old male). George's mother Lydia had passed away in 1859. Prior to the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, the family relocated to Aroostook County, settling in Township 6 (later known as Merrill), where the family had purchased a . The family now includes not only the Gardner children, but a Gardner grandchild, George A. Keith, the 5 year old son of Nellie O., who had divorced her husband several years before. Enoch R.'s first wife, Emma S. is also shown as living with the family at this time. T. Jefferson Roberts, Tabitha's younger brother had joined the family and was working along side his brother-in-law as a Farm laborer. As George grew older, he eventually retired from farming and turned the management of the farm over to his eldest son Enoch, who is shown as the Head of the family, along with his second wife, Harriet and their two eldest children, Harry M. and Nellie O. Gardner. George W. Gardner passed away on 23 Jun 1894 at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 23 days. His death record indicates the cause of death was Disease of the Lungs. He was buried in Maple Wood Cemetery (later renamed Merrill Cemetery). It is believed he is buried in the family plot, but his grave appears to be unmarked at this time.
