A physician was hurriedly called but pronounced him dead, and he was taken to the home which since the death of his wife has been cared for by his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shalley. Arrangements for the funeral yet await advice from his other daughter, Mrs. Chas. Ball of Fairfield. Mr. Halley came to Story county with his parents as a boy in the pioneer days before the civil war, and he had lived here ever since. He married here, Sarah, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Judiah Ray, and their family consisted of two daughters, Clara and Nellie, now respectively Mesdames Ball and Shalley. Mrs. Halley died in Texas nearly five years ago; but the daughters and their families survive. He was a man of considerable properties in land both in this county and in Texas, where he was wont in recent years to spend the most of his winters and whither he was proposing shortly to return for the coming winter. He had apparently been enjoying his usual health, and his death is a great surprise in the wide circle where he was known. From Nevada Evening Journal November 29, 1916 (page 5) OBITUARY OF G. W. HALLEY. Well Known Man Was Laid to Rest on Sunday. The funeral services of the late George W. Halley were held from the family home, corner of Chestnut and Fourth avenue south, Sunday afternoon at 2:30, and were largely attended by relatives and friends. The services were conducted by Rev. E. C. McDade of the Methodist church. Interment was made by the side of his wife, who departed this life a few years ago. Obituary. George Washington Halley was born in Ohio Feb. 17, 1843, and died very suddenly in Nevada on Nov. 24, 1916, aged 73 years, 7 months and 7 days. He came to Iowa with his parents about the time of the Civil war and settled southeast of Nevada in what is known as the Mullen settlement, near the summit church. He was married to Miss Sarah Ray about the year 1874 and they continued to live in that neighborhood for about ten years, when they moved to Nevada, and the family home has continued to be in the same place practically ever since. Mrs. Halley died Feb. 10, 1911. Since that time he had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Shalley, with the exception of the time that he has spent in travel looking after his business interests. There were but the two daughters, Mrs. Clara Ball of Fairfield and Mrs. Nellie Shalley of Nevada. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Clara Kirkendall and Mrs. Margaret Mullen. Besides these there are grandchildren and many relatives on Mrs. Halley's side of the family. Mr. Halley had lived a very circumcribed life, devoting his time to his home, his family and his business. He had never affiliated with any church or lodge, but is the testimony of his family that his life in the home was that of a Christian. Mr. Halley was a man of considerable business ability and had accumulated wide landed interests in the county and will leave to his heirs a considerable competency. The sorrowing daughters, sisters and other relatives will receive the sympathy of the people of the community in their hours of bereavement.
