The deceased was born in Connecticut, November 7, 1817. In his boyhood he removed with his parents to Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. Later he removed to Wisconsin and from there to the territory of Iowa and to this county in 1836. He settled first at Blue Point and later at what is now known as Wheelock's Mill in Steady Run Township. With the exception of about four years recently spent in South Missouri, he resided continuously in Keokuk County since he first entered it on foot from Burlington in 1836. Mr. Hayes was closely and actively identified with the early settlement and later development of this county and held the honor of being its first sheriff, having been selected to that office in May 1844. He was married five times and is survived by the last wife and nine children, seven sons and two daughters. With the exception of one daughter residing in Oregon, all were present at their father's funeral. The funeral took place from the Hayesville M.E. Church on Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev Wilson. The body was interred at the Pennington Cemetery. ------ Hedrick Journal, Hedrick, Iowa. 08 April 1896.
