George Washington Heller, son of Benjamin Heller and Harriett Ann Alford, was born July 21, 1879 near Towanda, McLean County, Illinois. He received his elementary and high school education at the Towanda, Illinois school, graduating in 1897. Heller, 93, long-time resident of Altoona, died of pneumonia at Good Samaritan Home in Indianola, Friday, August 18, after an illness of several years. George Washington Heller, son of Benjamin Heller and Harriett Ann Alford, was born July 21, 1879 near Towanda, McLean County, Illinois. He received his elementary and high school education at the Towanda, Illinois school, graduating in 1897. He attended Wesley University at Bloomington, Illinois from 1897 - 1900 and received his PHB from Northwestern Pharmacy School in 1902. From 1902 - 1904 he farmed with his father in Polk county and from 1904- 1907 was employed by Farmers Cooperative Creamery Co. of Des Moines, traveling in charge of southern Iowa stations. From 1907-1912 he traveled in Kansas for Western Silo Co. out of Des Moines and from 1912-1913 for International Harvester. From 1914-1915 he was a railway mail clerk between Omaha and Chicago. From this time on we see him finding that niche in life that was to become his specialty for the balance of his working life, the profession of accounting. From 1915 until 1933 he served as the deputy Polk county auditor. During this time, namely October 20, 1923, he was united in marriage to Florence Billingsley of Fairfield, Iowa. They were married in Davenport. From 1934-1938 he served as a tax accountant for attorneys; 1939-1940 state checker, county department for the state of Iowa. 1941-1944 he was an auditor for the state auditor's office and from 1944-1955 he was an auditor for the State Tax Commission. He was a member of the Altoona school board, serving at times as either secretary or treasurer. He was associated with Altoona city government as councilman since 1920, except for the three years of 1922-1924 until 1936 when he became mayor, which office he held consecutively until 1953, about one-third of a century. George served as a member of the Polk County Board of Education from 1918 until 1934. He was a past Clay township assessor having served for six years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge AF&AM 407; Past Master Scottish Rite, 32nd degree, a member of Za-Ga-Zig Shrine; a member of the Altoona United Methodist church since 1935 when he united under the minister of the Rev. E.H. Jackson. He served his church officially as a trustee. His hobbies have been baseball and football. He was a member of his college football team. He was also a good gardener and lawn keeper. He maintained a very strong sense of humor which endeared him to all who had come to know him. He leaves to mourn his passing one brother, Elias W. Heller of Alhambra, California, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Owens of Turlock, California; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence, whose passing occurred in February, 1971. His health has been commendably good until a little over a year ago, but had deteriorated steadily since that time. Services were held Monday, August 21 at the Altoona United Methodist church, by the pastor, Everett E. Pencock, with burial in the Altoona cemetery.
