Description	:	Born in Virginia not long after the American Revolution, young George found his way to Burke County (now Avery), NC where he fell in love with Sarah "Sally" Davis when they were both about 18 or 19 years old. She was one of the daughters of the old war veteran Billy Davis and his first wife. George and Sally married between 1800-1804, and had moved over the mountains to Carter County, TN by 1804 when their son Isaac was born. Read More	Born in Virginia not long after the American Revolution, young George found his way to Burke County (now Avery), NC where he fell in love with Sarah "Sally" Davis when they were both about 18 or 19 years old. She was one of the daughters of the old war veteran Billy Davis and his first wife. George and Sally married between 1800-1804, and had moved over the mountains to Carter County, TN by 1804 when their son Isaac was born. They may have had other children who did not survive before their daughter Rebecca was born around 1811-1812. They had moved back to what is now Avery County before her birth. The rest of their children were born in what is now Yancey County. Son Isaac was old enough to join his father in signing the petition in 1825 that called for the creation of Yancey. In January 1839, George sold two tracts of land containing a total of 654 acres to Isaac T. Avery and soon headed to Cades Cove, TN where the settlement in beautiful valley was booming. Soon all his family had left Yancey for what is now Graham, Swain, and Macon Counties, NC or went with him to Cades Cove. Some of Sally's siblings did likewise. In the Cove, George bought property in an area that became known as Rowan's Creek and set up a grist mill which operated well into the twentieth century, long after his death. It was capable of grinding both corn and wheat. Sally died between 1850 and 1852, and in 1857 George married a widow, Susan Campbell, who was 24 years younger than he. During the Civil War, when the residents of the Cove were divided in their allegiance, George and Susan were Union sympathizers, and one of their sons-in-law and his sons were Union soldiers. THE CADES COVE STORY by Randolph Shields contains a lengthy excerpt from a journal kept by a Union officer who escaped from a Confederate prison with several others. The officer describes how some of his men found shelter in the home of the Rowans. George died between 1870 and 1880.
