Tope passed away at his home in this city, Sunday afternoon, May 2, at 2 p.m. following an illness extending over the past two months, although he had been in poor health for the past several years, suffering with arthritis. Mr. Tope had led a very active life during his 35 years of residence in this section, and he was well known and highly respected. He came to Montana in 1908 and took up land just over the Helena hill where he resided until a few years ago, when he moved to this city. He was among the first of the large band of homesteaders to prove up on land here. He was very active in farming and did considerable experimenting with wheat and the most with corn. For many years he was one of the most active farmers in the Farm Bureau movement and worked closely with the extension service in farm experiments. George W. Tope was born Jan. 15, 1863, in Jackson county, Ohio, where he spent his early life and grew to young manhood. Believing that one had a better chance in the west, he drove a team from Ohio to Indiana where he lived for a number of years. He then decided his lot would be much better if he would continue on west and in 1908 he headed for Montana. Here he was perfectly satisfied and continued to live here until his death. He was united in marriage before going to Indiana and Mrs. Tope passed away Sept. 22, 1942. All of the family was born in Indiana before coming to Montana. He leaves to mourn his departure the following children: Mrs. Freeman Ramsey, Fort Benton; Mrs. Claude Deck, Portland, Ore.; Joseph Tope, Stockton, Calif.; William H. Tope, Fort Benton. In addition, he leaves 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister residing in Jackson county, Ohio, and other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held from the Louther chapel on Thursday afternoon, May 6, at 2 p..m. and will be conducted by the Rev. H. Gravenor, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery at Fort Benton.
