George Washington Pittman was called "Wash". Wash was 28 years old when he served as a private in Company F 24th Alabama Infantry CSA. Legend has it during a battle he was captured, after a prisoner exchange he went home to Florida. When he got back home he courted and married Sarah Catherine Pittman. Wash and Puss made their living farming. They owned sheep, cattle, and hogs. Wool was the major source of income for the family. They traded for the staples they needed. They milked cows, raised chickens, for meat and eggs. They raised their own hogs for lard, backbone, and middling (bacon) sausage and the best cured ham in the south, they had a vegetable garden the year round. Wash and Puss (Sarah) was one of the first families to settle in the Hurricane Creek Community. He built a large gabled "double pen" log house about a mile south of Pea River. The floors and ceilings were of dressed lumber. A sheltered "dog-trot" connected the split log kitchen to the dining room. Drinking water came from the open well. Their home was the center for family gathering and social activities in the Hurricane Creek community for the next half century. The house burned about 1925 after Wash built an anti-room on his porch and opened his own commissary, The Silas Post Office operated inside the Wash Pittman store from June 25,1904-June 30, 1909.
