Olson Served as City Engineer for 23 Years George W. Olson, City Engineer for the past twenty-three years, passed away suddenly at Saturday morning at the Choate Memorial Hospital. Mr. Olson, 59 years of age, residing at 27 Elijah Street, was the husband of Gladys F. (Doucette) Olson. Born in Woburn, he was a lifelong resident of the city, and probably knew more than anyone else living today about the underground and overground resources of the city. He was the son of the late Alfred P. and Hulda (Soderblom) Olson. Mr. Olson attended Woburn Schools, graduated from Woburn High School and received his Engineering Degree from Northeastern University. During his career in city service, Mr. Olson served as chairman of the Conservation Commission and was a confidant of every mayor who served in office during the span he served as City Engineer. When it came to projects that concerned the boundaries of the city, the resources and open spaces, sewer water and drainage programs, the city's chief executive automatically turned to Mr. Olson. Vitally interested in conservation and natural resources, Mr. Olson accepted the first chairmanship of the Conservation Commission during the administration of Mayor Edward F. Gill. He was on many occasions called upon to work in close association and in conjunction with the Supt. of Public Works Albert J. Wall. Mr. Wall valued the advice and counsel of Mr. Olson over the years, and on numerous occasions, Mr. Olson served as acting Supt. in the absence of Mr. Wall. He was called upon many times by interested industrialists who wished to locate in Woburn and sought engineering and vital statistic advice from the City Engineer. His professional advice was also sought by many of the city's organizations when they planned projects with they felt would ultimately effect the city's economic life and well being. Mr. Olson gave of his time and talents unstintingly over the years. He was a former member of the Woburn Lions Club and several other local organizations. He also held membership in Engineering societies of the state and on a national level. Surviving are his wife Gladys Olson, five sons George W. Jr., Alfred, Lawrence, James and David all of Woburn, two daughters Eleanor Mooney of Burlington and Elaine Dooley of Winchester, a niece Mary Doucette of Woburn and a sister in law Jean Mahoney of Peabody. Also surviving are seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held this morning from the McLaughlin Funeral Home, 54 Pleasant St., with a Solemn High Requiem Mass at St. Charles Church at 10 o'clock Internment followed at Calvary Cemetery, Woburn. Burial Date: April 12, 1971. Son of Alfred P. & Hulda H. (Soderblom) Olson. Husband of Gladys F. (Doucette) Olson.
