Description	:	George W Neff, 78, Pateros, a longtime Okanogan County orchardist, died at his home in Pateros early Sunday morning. He was born February 22, 1906, at New Palestine, Ind., where he received his elementary and high school education. He then attended Purdue University, where he was active in track and graduated with a major in education in 1929. Following graduation he moved to this area and worked for his uncle, John Larrabee, in Pateros and at B & O Orchards in Malott. Read More	George W Neff, 78, Pateros, a longtime Okanogan County orchardist, died at his home in Pateros early Sunday morning. He was born February 22, 1906, at New Palestine, Ind., where he received his elementary and high school education. He then attended Purdue University, where he was active in track and graduated with a major in education in 1929. Following graduation he moved to this area and worked for his uncle, John Larrabee, in Pateros and at B & O Orchards in Malott. During this time he served as a basketball referee in Wenatchee, where he met Dowane V Barnhill. They were married on December 30, 1934, at Wenatchee, and lived at Pateros and Malott. In 1943, Mr. Neff planted an orchard at Pateros and they established their permanent home there. Following the death of his uncle, John Larrabee, in 1949, he and his brother, John E Neff, took over Larrabee and Neff Orchards at Pateros. Mr. Neff was very active in the orchard industry and was responsible for the Hy-Early Red Delicious apple which he developed in the early 1950s. He was also an active member of the Pateros United Methodist Church and had served on the Sunday School board and the board of trustees. Mr. Neff had served 21 years on the Okanogan-Douglas County Hospital Board and was chairman of the board when he retired from it in 1968. He was an avid skier and loved track and field sports. Survivors include one daughter, Ann Jenkins, East Wenatchee; two sons, Thomas W Neff, Pateros, an Earl G Neff, East Wenatchee; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on March 25, 1981, one son, and by his brother, John E Neff, in 1975. Memorial services were held in Pateros United Methodist Church, Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock with the Rev. Kevin D Dow officiating. Services concluded at the church. Memorials may be made to the Heart Fund or to the Memorial Fund of the Pateros United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
