Services will be held at 11 a.m. CDT Saturday at the Selfridge School Gym, with the Revs. Marcus Bakke and Andrew Deason officiating. Burial will be in Selfridge Cemetery. George William Walker was born April 24, 1917, to John and Magdalena (Bickel) Walker Sr.at their home near Selfridge, N.D. He was one of nine boys and six girls in the Walker Family. They lived on a farm 14 miles west of Selfridge, where George attended rural school, and later Selfridge High School. Following his education, he spent two years in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and was stationed at Fargo and Kinsel, where they built dams and duck ponds. George then returned home for a short time, then went to California to find work. He worked at the mint factory for three years. On Oct. 21, 1941, he was drafted into the army. He took his basic training at Camp Wallace, Texas. In January 1942, he was sent to the Panama Canal Zone, where he spent 26 months. He then went on to Fort Logen in Denver, then to Fort Bliss, Texas, where he spent six months before going to Stewart Georgia. From there he went to Fort Meade, Maryland, where he served as an interpreter, as there were 6000 German POWS. Six months later, he transferred to Camp Shanks, in New York, where he boarded the ship "Queen Elizabeth" on Jan. 14, 1943, and arrived in Glasco, Scotland. George eventually ended up on the front lines in Paris, France, where he joined the 3rd Army, 35th Division, 1st Battalion, where he stayed until the war ended. George fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After his discharge in October 1945, he returned to North Dakota. On Nov. 26, 1946, he married Ruby Buechler at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLaughlin, S.D. Following their marriage, they made their home on a farm 6 1/2 miles south of Selfridge, where George was engaged in farming with his brother Adam. In 1948, George bought a house moving permit and the Harold Snyder truck line, which he operated as Walker Transfer Company, a contract to deliver coal for the government at Fort Yates. In 1965, George had a contract to bus school children for the Selfridge school district, which he did for eight years. Later, George worked at the Selfridge Cheese Plant for nine years, until he took his retirement. George was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Selfridge, and provided music during the church services. He enjoyed fishing, music and gardening. George is survived by his wife, Ruby, Selfridge; 10 sons, Gerald (Spring), Gillette Wyo., Melvin, Los Alamitos, Calif., Myron (Beth), Ontario, Canada, Maynard (Nora), Rodney (Beverly), Miles (Vanessa), and Michael, all of Gillette, Merle, Bismarck, and Matthew (Laurie), Marvin (Shelly), all of Gillette; six daughters, Charlotte (Clem) Rohrich, and Charlene Block, all of Gillette, Corla (Sidney) Weigel, Lincoln, Cathy (Larry) Ballinger, Gresham, Ore., Cheryl Feist, Selfridge, and Colleen (Antonio) Bianachi, Framingham, Mass.; six brothers, John Walker Jr., Bismarck, Albert Walker, Mesa, Ariz., Art Walker, Mandan, Lawrence Walker, Bozeman, Mont., Sam Walker, Pierre, S.D., and Herman Walker, Sioux Falls, S.D.; one sister, Amelia Feist, Bismarck; 32 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Marlin and Martin; two brothers; five sisters; two grandchildren; and one son-in-law.
