Lonaconing, Md., April 7. George Winkler died at his home in Barton Wednesday night at 9:45. Mr. Winkler had been an invalid several years, but had been able to get about until about two weeks ago. He was a native of the province of Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, and came to this country in the early '60s. He lived in Newark, N. J., a short time and came to George's Creek in 1864. He lived in Lonaconing several years and spent some time in Piedmont. He returned to Germany for a brief visit and while there married Madeline Hohing, who is a sister to the late Conrad Hohing, of Lonaconing. Mrs. Winkler survives her husband, but is very feeble. Mr. Winkler leaves his sons, Adolph, August, Otto, Joseph and Edward, and one unmarried daughter, Miss Teresa. All these reside in Barton. George Winkler learned the locksmith's trade in Germany, and worked at it for several years after coming to this country. After coming to George's Creek he became a mine blacksmith and worked many years at the old Barton mine. Although always a working man, he acquired a thorough education, and was considered one of the best scholars in this region. He had a wonderfully retentive memory, and being a greedy reader, he kept well posted on all subjects of public interest. The funeral will take place from St. Gabriel's Church. Barton, tomorrow at 9 a. m., and will proceed from Barton to the Catholic cemetery by street car."
