Read More	Birth: 25 May 1876 at Walter, Saratovskaya Oblast, Russian Federation (Note: Naturalization papers signed in 1918 give birth as 25 May 1875) George Woitt, an ethnic German, was born at the Volga River colony of Walter in Russia, 70 miles west of the city of Saratov and 3 miles from the city of Frank. His father's name was Nicholas Woitt. George, along with his older brother Jacob and younger brother John, were orphaned at an early age and raised by relatives. George received much support and care from his foster father, Wendell Woitt. As a boy in Russia, George's job was herding hogs. When old enough to serve in the Army, George was drafted for the Japanese and Russian War. The conflict was of short duration, and his duty was to polish the officer's shoes and run errands. In 1903, George married Katherine "Katie" Reiswig at Walter, Russia. In 1907, they came to the United States with their 6-week-old daughter, Nina Marie, and settled at Odessa, Washington where his foster father set up housekeeping for them. George worked for farmers on wheat ranches and also worked building brick chimneys, plastering walls and ceilings, and building sidewalks. In 1917, the family moved to Wapato, Washington where his foster father again helped by buying a 10-acre orchard of peaches, pears and apples. George worked hard as an orchardist, added two more bedrooms to the home, and paid off the debt within two years. In the 1930's they moved into a home on West 6th St., Wapato, six blocks from town, school and church. They owned a car, but often walked. They were members of the Lutheran Church until 1926 when they became charter members of the Pilgrim Congregation Church. George helped build the church building which is still standing at the corner of East 3rd Street. The Woitts were a happy family. Wife Katie was diabetic for many years. She died at age 71 in 1956 at Toppenish Hospital. George spent his last few years in a nursing home on 709 S. 25th Ave. He suffered a heart attack at age 87 years, 10 months, 18 days and died in the St. Elizabeth hospital in Yakima in 1964. Preceding him in death were his wife, Katie, two-year-old son, George Jr., and daughter Nina Marie Woitt Kissler. George was survived by sons Alfred Woitt of Yakima, Washington, and Solomon Woitt of Conrad, California; and daughters Mrs. Martha R. Kissler of Wapato, Washington, and Mrs. Helen Ashby of Wapato, Washington; 31 Grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Casket Bearers at his funeral were Carl Kissler, Wm Arnold, Wm.
