Description	:	George W. Porter, son of Andrew J. and Matilda Porter, was born in Neosho, Missouri, January 7th, 1869. He departed this life at his home in Fairmont, Neb., October 21st, 1955, aged 86 years, 9 months and 14 days. At the age of four he came to Nebraska in a covered wagon with his parents, who settled on a homestead near Lexington. Five years later his family moved to Fairmont, having purchased a farm southeast of town. This was to become the family home for many years and in this neighborhood, he grew to manhood. At the age of four he came to Nebraska in a covered wagon with his parents, who settled on a homestead near Lexington. Five years later his family moved to Fairmont, having purchased a farm southeast of town. This was to become the family home for many years and in this neighborhood, he grew to manhood. Mr. Porter attended the Peru State Normal school, from which he graduated in 1892. Following his he entered the teaching profession, teaching in Diller, Sutton and rural schools in Fillmore county. While teaching in Fillmore county, he had as a pupil Kathryn Hafer, who later was to become his wife. In addition to his teaching career, he lived and worked in the gold mining areas near Ward, Col. He then returned to the Fairmont vicinity and took over the family farm. March 8, 1904, he was married to Kathryn Hafer of Geneva, Neb. In 1906 he moved his family to Geneva, where he engaged in the farm implement business with W.T. Thomas. A year later, the family moved to Fairmont and Mr. Porter established his own implement business which he maintained until his retirement in 1943. March 8, 1954, Mr. and Mrs. Porter observed their golden wedding anniversary. He is survived by his widow,; two sons, John J. of Lincoln and Dr. G. LeRoy of Urbana, Ill.; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. H.M. Miller of Seward and Mrs. R.G. Dunlap of Alma. A brother and sister died in childhood. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews. Mr. Porter was a devoted and faithful church member all his life. As a boy, he helped establish a Presbyterian rural church and Sunday school near the farm home. He later became a member of the Fairmont Congregational church and was instrumental in the federation of the Congregational and Presbyterian churches in this community. He continued to take an active part in the church until failing health prevented further participation. For many years he was a member of the Fairmont school board, the Commercial club and other civic and political activities of the community. Mr. Porter's life was one largely dedicated to family, church, civic and educational activities. Funeral services were held at the Federated church in Fairmont at 2 p.m., Monday, October 24. Rev. Willard F. Payne officiated. Oliver Moul sang "In the Garden," "Some Sweet Day" and "Bye and Bye." Janet Bridgman was accompanist. Pallbearers were Willard Goodrich, A.P. Stewart, Charles F.
