September 7--George Zimmerer and another young man named Charles Ernest Thomas were drowned in Ash Creek, in Custer County, forty miles north of this place. The men were in a top buggy and attempted to ford the creek, but owning to recent heavy rains the bottom of the creek had been washed out, leaving an almost perpendicular bank with about eight feet of water. Thomas was found under the horses, tangled up with harness and lines. Zimmerer's body was found a short distance down the creek. Zimmerer received a severe blow upon the mouth, probably having been kicked by one of the horses. His face wore a pleasant expression, as though he had never realized his position, and had drowned while in a stunned condition. These fact were related by Mr. Johnson who discovered the accident. Kearney Daily Hub, Sept. 7 and 8, 1900 Contributor: Pritch (47028758) -–————————— TWO MEN DROWNED Ernest Thomas, in the employ of the Kearney and Northwestern Telephone company and the Gilcrest Lumber company, and George Zimmerer, manager and proprietor of the Home Telephone exchange at Lexington, were drowned in Ash Creek, Custer County, Thursday afternoon. The two were out on a tour of inspection of the K. &N. W. toll lines and were coming down the line from Callaway and on their way to Georgetown, on the (South) Loup river extension. The two men took dinner at Boblett's ranch at noon and were expected at Georgetown at three o'clock. So it is probable that the accident occurred about two o'clock. Mr. Zimmerer had been in Lexington about three years, and was formerly manager of the electric plant at Gothenburg, being succeeded by H. C. Evans, now manager of the Home Telephone company's plant in the city. He started in with small capital, had built up a profitable business, was making money, and said to Mr. Evans a few days ago that the first of the coming year he would have his exchange paid for and be entirely out of debt. He had volunteered to make a trip over the Kearney Northwestern lines, between Kearney, Callaway and Broken Bow, and would not accept any compensation for his time, considering the outing sufficient remuneration. He was a practical electrician and telephone operative and his assistance was considered quite valuable. He was a married man, about twenty-nine years old, and had no children.
