Description	:	Known as "Lena", Georgia Diena Sweeden grew up with sisters. Abby and Ellen were older, Martha and Anne were younger. Lena's parent's were from Germany: George Martin Sweeden, and Behrendje Ehmen Reemtsma (another record refers to her as Betsy Remtsma). They married in Hanover, Germany in 1856 and immigrated to the U.S. before Lena was born in 1861. Lena was born in Harding, Iowa. She married William Baker in Iowa on August 24, 1887. They married in Hanover, Germany in 1856 and immigrated to the U.S. before Lena was born in 1861. Lena was born in Harding, Iowa. She married William Baker in Iowa on August 24, 1887. He had come from Holland just 5 years earlier. They both spoke English, and most likely Dutch and German. He was 25 and she was 26 when they married. They lived in Iowa for the next 13 years. Their first two children were daughters: Minnie May - born July, 1888, and Birdie - June 1890. Then came a son - Willie, born Dec. 14th, 1891. Imagine a Christmas card with their cute little family in 1892: William(29) and Lena Baker (30), with three beautiful children: Minnie (4), Birdie (2), and Willie (1). Sadly, the following Christmas, 1893 there would just be William, Lena, and their two little girls. Willie died October 27th, 1893, before his second birthday. Perhaps the hope of new life brought this family some comfort. Lena would have known she was with child at the time of Willie's death. Their 4th child was born 6 months later, on April 14th, 1894. They named him George (after Lena's father). How did Lena deal with her grief after losing Willie? What brought her comfort? She must have been happy to have another son, but sad that Willie and George wouldn't grow up together, romping and playing together as little boys do. Toddlers are so precious, with chubby cheeks, inquisitive minds, and a budding vocabulary. How her heart must have ached for her little cherub! William and Lena celebrated their 9th wedding anniversary with the birth of their 5th child! William Wesley was born August 24, 1896. Little Willie would never be replaced or forgotten, but God had given the Baker's another son to bear his father's name. Leo Roy was born August 8, 1898, their last child born in Iowa. The turn of the century found William and Lena in Minnesota, where their 7th child (3rd daughter) was born. She was given a strong German name: Genevieve Hulda, but went by "Jennie" as recorded on the 1910 Census record. Richard Leonard was the caboose, Born December 6th, 1904 in North Dakota. Lena gave birth to 8 children: 3 daughters and 5 sons. 7 lived to adulthood. If they had a family picture taken in 1905, we'd see William and Lena in their early 40's, with Minnie (17), Birdie (15), George (11), William (9), Leo (6), Genevieve (3) and little Richard (1).
