A daughter of the late Charles D. and Lula Layman Shank, Georgia was born on July 29, 1908, in Harrisonburg, Va., and graduated from Hood College. A daughter of the late Charles D. and Lula Layman Shank, Georgia was born on July 29, 1908, in Harrisonburg, Va., and graduated from Hood College. Mrs. Vance was an Army officer's wife while rearing her children. She was an early objector to the Vietnam War. In the 1960s she began a career in floral design, becoming the country's foremost authority on dried flowers. For more than 35 years her magnificent arrangements decorated the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the U.S. Department of State and many historic homes. In 1973, her book, The Decorative Art of Dried Flower Arrangement, received The Helen S. Hull Award for Literary Horticultural Interest from the National Council of State Garden Clubs. Georgia lectured nationally and conducted workshops at her farm. Among her many awards are the American Horticultural Society 1990 Frances Jones Poetker Award, the Garden Club of America 1995 Katharine Thomas Cary Medal and Hood College Distinguished Alumna of the Year Award for 1999. Mrs. Vance was a member of the Garden Club of Virginia, the Garden Club of America, the Garden Club of Alexandria and the Officer's Wives Garden Club of Ft. Belvoir. On Oct. 7, 1935, she married James Davis Vance Sr., who preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1974. Her sister, Lurena Mae Shank, also preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons, James D. Vance Jr. of Hoboken, N.J., and J. Peter Vance of Richmond, Va.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Vance Crew and James Douglas Vance, both of Richmond, Va.; one great-grandson, Matthew Crew; and a brother, Charles Daniel Shank Jr. of Mount Solon, Va. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg, Va. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
