Description	:	Gerald Bartek, born May 20, 1942 in Staplehurst to Jerry and Georgia (Dvorak) Bartek passed away from Parkinson’s on Aug. 5 at his home in Lincoln. After the death of his mother in 1945, Gerald and his 5 siblings lived with his grandparents Celestine and Jiri Bartek in Dwight for 5 years. After high school,... Read More	Gerald Bartek, born May 20, 1942 in Staplehurst to Jerry and Georgia (Dvorak) Bartek passed away from Parkinson’s on Aug. 5 at his home in Lincoln. After the death of his mother in 1945, Gerald and his 5 siblings lived with his grandparents Celestine and Jiri Bartek in Dwight for 5 years. He attended St. Mary’s in David City and Dwight Assumption. Upon his father’s marriage to Bessie Pracheil, the family moved to Saline County where Gerald attended a variety of elementary schools and Dorchester High School from which he graduated in 1961. After high school, Gerald enlisted in the U.S. Marines, serving from 1961 to 1964. Gerald then enrolled in the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, graduating in 1972 with a degree in civil engineering. He married JoAnn Vanis on June 3, 1967 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Ulysses. He worked for Union Pacific, Railroad Transportation Safety District, and finally the Nebraska Department of Roads from which he retired in 2011 after over 30 years. For his lengthy service to the state, he was honored as an Admiral in the The Great Navy of the State of Nebraska. He served as President of the S.I.D. for his neighborhood, and on the board of the Pine Lake Golf Club. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and in the Knights’ weekly golf league. He and JoAnn were faithful Catholics and active members of the Cathedral of the Risen Christ including forming and serving in the Godparent program in the 1990s. His greatest pride and joy was his family. He and JoAnn raised five daughters in their home of 35 years. He remained a ‘farm boy’ in his heart, committed to doing the work himself whether on his house, his yard, or his considerable garden. He valued his many friends and neighbors. He got to travel the country and the world. First, he traveled with his daughters’ for many sports and dance events, then visiting his children and grandchildren. He was incredibly proud of his daughters, their families, and professions. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn, his daughters, and their husbands, Mary and Matti Iivanainen of Nummela, Finland, Sara and Lt. Col. Richard Ruliffson (U.S.A.F.) of Haughton, Louisiana, Anne and Jason Buckbee of Soldotna, Alaska, Dr. Rachel Bartek and Dr. Erdem Turhan of Washington D.C. and Leah and Benjamin Housel of Grand Island. He is survived by 13 grandchildren Brendan, Noah, Oliver, and Anna Iivanainen, Charles, Benjamin and Isaac Ruliffson, Haley, Zac, Owen, and Morgan Buckbee, and Elif and Jerry Turhan. He is survived by his brother Benedict Bartek of Friend, his sister Marlene (Steve Leon) Bartek of New Jersey, his step-sisters Wilma Chrastil of Crete and Evelyn Kasl of Dorchester, his sister-in-law Teresa Bartek of Dorchester, lifelong friends Shelly and Rose Bruha of Dorchester, and his in-laws Vern (Cherie) Vanis, Loretta (Russ) Daro, and Paul Vanis. Gerald is preceded in death by his mother Georgia (Dvorak) Bartek, father and step-mother Jerry and Bessie (Pracheil) Bartek, his brothers, Albert Bartek of Crete, Val Bartek of Ogallala, and Leonard Bartek of Dorchester, his sister and her husband Angela and Bill Lucas of Tacoma, Washington, his step-sister Pauline Nannen, of Hallam, his step-brother Art Pracheil of Crete, his nephew Patrick Bartek of Lincoln, and several miscarried children and grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, August 8, 2020, at Cathedral of the Risen Christ, 3500 Sheridan Blvd in Lincoln with Fr Justin Wylie celebrating the Mass. Burial will be at 2:30 pm Saturday at St Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in David City, Nebraska. Visitation will be on Friday from 5 pm to 7 pm at Butherus Maser and Love funeral home, 4040 A St. Rosary will be at 7 pm Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation
