He was a World War II veteran serving in the Coast Guard in Alaska. He attended Pacific Lutheran University and received a degree in Elementary Education in 1955. He taught in the Clover Park School District until his retirement in 1981. Gerald married Marian Nicholson in 1950 and is now reunited with the love of his life who preceded him in death in 1986. He is survived by his children, Colleen (Paul) Lienau, Gerald Daniel (Karla) Cashen II, Sara (Mark) Shumaker, grandson Brian (Melissa) Claar, (and Gerald's first great-grandson due February, 2008), granddaughter Marisa Shumaker, brothers John Cashen and Frank (Irene) Cashen and a large extended family. Visitation will be September 28th 2-7pm at Fir Lane Memorial Park, 924 East 176th Street, Spanaway, WA. Funeral Mass will be celebrated September 29th at 10:00am at Our Lady Queen Of Heaven Catholic Church, 14601 A Street, Spanaway, WA. In appreciation for the wonderful, compassionate care our dad received, memorials may be sent to Skagit Hospice, P.O. Box 1376, Mt. Vernon, WA. 98273.
