Read More	Gerald Elford Cornfield June 30, 1926 - October 28, 2012 CORNFIELD, Gerald Elford - June 30, 1926 - October 28, 2012 - Gerald Cornfield, in his 87th year, passed away at Errinrung Nursing Home on October 28, 2012. Gerald was born at Fairmount in 1926 to Tom and Elva Cornfield. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Audrey (nee Hewgill) and their two daughters Brenda and Ken Holden of Clarksburg and Doris and Doug Snoddy of Waterloo. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Jodi Holden and Warren Wilcox of Epping and their children Joren and Drew; Jason and Diana Holden of Brampton and their children Joshua and Jacob; and Tim Snoddy of Waterloo. Gerald is also survived by his brother Harold and his wife, Wilma of Meaford and sister Fern Park (late Carl Thompson and Ivan Park) of Thornbury. Predeceased by his parents Tom and Elva Cornfield; Tom's second wife, Violet; by his youngest sister and her husband, Freda and Leighton Vail; and infant siblings Lloyd and Faye. Gerald was always a hard worker. He left school at the age of 14 to become a hired farm hand for a dollar a day. In the early 1940's, Gerald went west for the wheat harvest. Later, he took employment at Canada Packers in Toronto where he trained as an electrician. In 1945, he enlisted (at the age of 17) into the Canadian Armed Forces but, the War ended prior to him being called to duty. He returned to his father's farm in Euphrasia Township. In September of 1947, he married Audrey Hewgill. They purchased a 110 acre farm from Gerald's father at Epping and developed its productivity until 1969 when Gerald suffered a heart attack while employed at Talisman Ski Resort. Shortly after his heart attack, Gerald and Audrey moved to Thornbury but, maintained some of their property at Epping. During his recovery, he obtained his real estate license. Later, Gerald along with Ken and Vernon Cornfield started "Cornfield Real Estate". Over the years their business grew to include offices in Collingwood, Thornbury and Meaford. In the late 1980's, Gerald turned over the Thornbury office to his daughter Brenda. While Gerald and Audrey were in real estate, they owned and operated the Thornbury Car Wash. After retiring from real estate, Gerald and Audrey built their dream home on 50 acres of their original Epping property. With many years of hard work, their Epping home quickly became a beautiful estate property with elaborate flower gardens, a fish pond, and beautiful views of the Beaver Valley. During their years in Epping, Gerald and Audrey ran a successful Bed and Breakfast operation and prided themselves on having many repeat guests. They stayed at the "farm" in Epping until 2002 when they moved to Meaford. Gerald was an active community citizen. He took the position of treasurer and caretaker of the Epping United Church until it closed in the early 1960's. Gerald was also active in the Masonic Lodge and later became a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He enjoyed his years as a Shriner participating in many motorcycle cavalcades to raise money for Children's Hospitals. He developed many lifelong friendships as an active member of the Thornbury Rotary Club. During his real estate years, Gerald sponsored a local hockey team of which his nephew, Gerald Jr played on. He and Audrey were also faithful contributors to many local charities. They maintained active membership over the years at both the Meaford and Thornbury United Churches. Those who have known Gerald, will remember him as an active outdoor enthusiast. His quality of life was greatly improved when taking an early morning tree stand during the fall deer hunt or dropping a fishing line at a favorite fishing hole. Gerald and Audrey thoroughly enjoyed their annual fishing trips to Manitoulin Island and also a trip to Tofino, BC with Brenda and Ken. Gerald continued to deer hunt until 2010. Gerald and Audrey were also avid campers and enjoyed many trips with family especially with brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Lois Hewgill. They enjoyed travelling with their motor home throughout Canada and Florida. Eventually, they purchased a retirement home in Lake Placid, Florida where they wintered for many years. A Memorial Service to celebrate Gerald's life on Friday, November 2, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Beaver Valley Community Centre, Thornbury. Reverend Helen Hume will be officiating. GARDINER-WILSON FUNERAL HOME in Meaford. Cremation and private committal have already taken place. Published on October 31, 2012
