He attended country school through the eighth grade and then farmed with his father. He also helped on neighbors’ farms. From October 1950 through October 1952, during the Korean Conflict, Jerry served in the United States Army; he received a Bronze Star for his service. On March 2, 1954, Jerry married Izetta Pauline Fouts at St. Patrick’s Church in Dunlap, Iowa. The couple eventually made their home in Irwin, Iowa, where Jerry worked as a carpenter and began farming his own land near Irwin. He always took great pride in keeping his farm in tip-top shape, and continued to do so until his retirement in 1988. Jerry was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, and as a younger man, had been active with the Knights of Columbus in Earling, Iowa. A quiet and reserved individual, Jerry preferred to lead and parent by example. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s sports games, playing cards with friends, and golfing. For many years, he and Pauline would often attend square dances. More recently, the couple spent their winter months in Mission, Texas. Locally, Jerry and Pauline often volunteered by delivering meals for the Harlan Senior Center. Jerry Kloewer died on Saturday, August 1, 2020, at his Harlan, Iowa, home. He had reached the age of 94 years and 3 days. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eugene Kloewer and Roman Kloewer; and two sisters, Rita Leinen and Marie Block-Smith. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Pauline Kloewer of Harlan, Iowa; four daughters, Sue (Steve) Daeges and Jeri (Steve) Ozbun, both of Harlan, Iowa, and Connie (Bill) Catrenich and Cindy (Curt) Schultz, both of Ankeny, Iowa; three sisters, Sister Fran Kloewer of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Margaret (Raphael) Grote of Dunlap, Iowa, and Stella Bexten of Manilla, Iowa; two brothers, Charles (Rosie) Kloewer of Mapleton, Iowa, and Mike (Marlys) Kloewer of Manilla, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Kathleen Kloewer of Panama, Iowa; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Father Dan Gehler of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Earling, Iowa, celebrating. John Rosman served as the musician. Casket bearers were his grandchildren: Rick Ozbun, Troy Ozbun, Matt Daeges, Courtney Schultz, Zach Daeges, Missy Larsen, Chad Schultz, Adam Catrenich, and Amber Catrenich. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. Memorials may be made to School Sisters of Saint Francis, 1545 S. Layton Blvd., Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53215. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home, Inc. in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
