Military rites were conducted by members of the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit. The son of Elza M. and Ava Bell Harlan Monroe, he was born Jan. 13, 1920, at Brooklyn. He attended Brooklyn schools. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army and was at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked. He also served in the Korean conflict. Mr. Monroe worked for the Hughes Construction Co., the Rex Cigar Store and the Steak House restaurant, all in Grinnell. He later worked for a nursery in Henry, Ill., until poor health forced his retirement in 1978. Mr. Monroe had lived in Williamsburg for the past eight years. He was a member of Focht-Tennant Post No. 53, American Legion, in Grinnell. Surviving are three brothers, Albert of Eugene, Ore., Elsworth of Moline, Ill., and George of Anaheim, Calif., and three sisters, Katherine M. Findlay of Rock Island, Ill., Irene M. Greer of St. Augustine, Fla., and Frances Mehlert of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents.
