Nies , 86, Royal Center, will be at 1 p.m. Monday in All Saints Catholic Church. He died at 3:50 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008 in Chase Center, Logansport. Born Dec. 20, 1921, in Pulaski County, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Mabel (Gerlach) Nies . He was married on Feb. 8, 1947, to Elsie M. Small, who preceded in death on Aug. 19, 1987. Gerald was a 1940 Lucerne High School graduate. He was a medic in the U.S. Army, serving in the Pacific Theater during WWII with the battalion that liberated the Philippines. Gerald was a member of All Saints Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, watching softball and working on his farm. He was also an avid Indiana basketball fan and he loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a machinist retiring from General Tire after 35 years. Survivors include daughter, Mary Downhour, Royal Center; son, Ron Nies , Royal Center; daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Mason, Texas; four grandchildren, Billy Nies and Laura Nies , Texas, Chrissy Downhour, Royal Center and Angie Downhour, Fort Wayne; sisters-in-law, Betty Nies and Mary Ellen Nies , both of Royal Center, Peg Nies and Dorothy Thompson, both of Logansport; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, James William; four brothers, Basil, George, Keith and Walter Nies ; and sister, Dorothy Renkenberger. Burial, with military rites, will be in South St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Pulaski. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday in Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Home, Royal Center. Memorial contributions may be made to Chase Center and/or the American Heart Association.
