Jerry was the second child of nine born May 26, 1953 in New Rockford, ND from the marriage of his parents, John and Ruth (Ortley) Cavanaugh. Read More	Gerald "Jerry" Cavanaugh, 63, of St. Michael, ND passed away Sunday, October 23, 2016 in Oakcrest, 4000 Valley Square, Grand Forks, ND. Jerry was the second child of nine born May 26, 1953 in New Rockford, ND from the marriage of his parents, John and Ruth (Ortley) Cavanaugh. He attended the Little Flower School at St. Michael's Indian Mission in St. Michael's ND and attended St. Mary's Academy in Devils Lake ND graduating in 1972. He went on to graduate from Minot State University in 1981. He lived most of his life on or near the St Michaels area. At the age of six, Jerry contracted rheumatic fever that would later in life be the cause of two major heart surgeries. This did not stop him during his grade school and high school years from becoming a star athlete in basketball, football, and track, throwing the javelin and high jump. In his professional life, he was respected for his ability in "grant writing” and was able over the years to bring in a tremendous amount of financial assets for projects within the Spirit Lake Nation. He was the second intern at Devils Lake Sioux Manufacturing in management and production that would help in developing a manufacturing background. He was the first tribal member of Spirit Lake to become CEO of the Spirit Lake Nation for the Dakota Tribal Industry (DTI). He was a recipient of the Bush Fellowship for business administration. Jerry cultivated many interests in his life. He created a small personal industry in making small peace pipe earrings from pipestone. He also devoted much time and energy into building and flying model aircraft that he would fly at various places and would attend many conferences around the country that were dealing in model aircraft. He also developed an interest in skydiving much to the consternation of his mother. He made a number of jumps and his logbook indicates successful completion of each one. Over the last six years of his life, he started a decline in health due to an unknown cause but would be diagnosed as Parkinson–like disease. For the last three years, he was in nursing care, first at New Rockford, and then moved to Grand Forks to be closer to his brother. He entered into the Spirit world surrounded by family on a Sunday autumn afternoon around 2:05pm. He is survived by his sisters, Mary E. Cavanaugh, and Melissa Kay Cavanaugh both of St. Michael’s, ND; brothers, The Rev. Fr. John Cavanaugh, Reynolds, ND, Willard, Tulsa, OK, David, Clark Anthony, Perry Joseph, and Jeffrey Joel, all of St. Michael’s, ND; many nieces and nephews; friends and family. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Ruth (Ortley) Cavanaugh; his grandparents, John Jerome and Mary Adele Dubois Cavanaugh and Daniel and Mary Jane Belgarde Ortley. A special "thank you" to the staff of Oakcrest at Valley Memorial 4000 in Grand Forks. Their care and support were tremendously appreciated. Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 27 with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service and Rosary Service in St. Michael's Catholic Church, St Michaels ND.
