Hulsebus April 25, 1922 - January 27, 2017 Gerald LeRoy Hulsebus was born April 25, 1922, on the farm at Dow City, Iowa, the son of Joe and Sophie Hulsebus. He died at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, on Friday, January 27, 2017, at the age of ninety-four. Gerald received his education in the rural schools near his home. He was baptized in Christ October 13, 1922, and confirmed April 5, 1936, at St. John Lutheran Church in Buck Grove. He served his country in the Army Air Force as an automotive mechanic beginning in 1942, was sent overseas in 1944 and was honorably discharged in 1945. On May 7, 1944, he was united in marriage to Mary Miller at the Army Air Force Base in Mt. Home, Idaho. The couple was blessed with the birth of four children. They had been married seventy-one years when Mary died in 2015. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. After returning from the service, Gerald continued his life-long career of farming and started Hulsebus Repair on the home farm where he also taught his sons to do mechanical work. He was a member and served as treasurer of St. John Lutheran Church in Buck Grove until it closed and then transferred his membership to Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing in South Dakota and hunting in the local area, taking his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with him. His favorite television programs were westerns and hunting and fishing shows. Listening to music and socializing at cards with family were also enjoyable pastimes for him. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Mary; two sons, Jerry and Terry; one brother, Boyd; and two sisters, Lorna and Betty. Survivors include; one son, Ernie; one daughter, Janet; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Mary-Jo; David, Mary, Venessa, Michael; Jenny and husband, Kelly, Emily, Abigial; Sherry and husband, Pete, Sean and Will; Joey and husband, Brian, Kelby and Kaden; Shelly and Alexandria; daughter-in-law: Bev ; other relatives and friends.
