Description	:	Gerald (Jerry) Loyd Sievert died April 16, 2007, at his home in Fairmont Nebraska, at the age of 82. Jerry was born March 28, 1925, in Shelby, Nebraska to Karl and Ruth (Hulse) Sievert. Jerry graduated from Rising City High School in 1942. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in the 179th Coastal Artillery Battalion and saw action in the Philippines, Leyte and Korea before receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He was married to Ruth Paxton after returning from the Army. To this union two children were born. Read More	Gerald (Jerry) Loyd Sievert died April 16, 2007, at his home in Fairmont Nebraska, at the age of 82. Jerry was born March 28, 1925, in Shelby, Nebraska to Karl and Ruth (Hulse) Sievert. Jerry graduated from Rising City High School in 1942. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in the 179th Coastal Artillery Battalion and saw action in the Philippines, Leyte and Korea before receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He was married to Ruth Paxton after returning from the Army. To this union two children were born. On June 25, 1950, Jerry married Loretta Irene Gillham at Papillion, Nebraska. To this union 3 children were born. Jerry and Irene moved their family to Fairmont, Nebraska in 1955. Jerry was a truck driver until 1971. Then he was employed by the Fairmont Farmer's Co-op until he retired in 1984. Jerry was an active member of the American Legion, a charter member of the Lions Club, and a member of the Fairmont Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He was the scoutmaster for the Fairmont Boy Scouts during the time his sons were involved in the program. Jerry enjoyed working with wood and sharing the things he made with his family. He made sure every child, grandchild and great-grandchild had received items he made, from postal banks to pig cutting boards and 2 step-children's stools. Throughout the years Jerry enjoyed gardening, woodworking, antique cars, coin collecting, hunting, genealogy, and cooking. Jerry and Irene's doors were always open to their family and friends. Many stormy nights their home sheltered out of town friends of their children who were unable to make it home. Family vacations consisted of boating, skiing, camping, and trips to the Colorado Mountains. These are the memories that the family hols dear. Jerry spent his retirement years playing with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were the center of his life. On November 7, 2006, Jerry was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He lived his last few months to the fullest, focusing on his family, wrapping up loose ends, completing wood projects for his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. He set goals and strived to reach them, holding on until the end. During his last months of life, Jerry found God. He and his son-in-law Dick were baptized April 15, 2007, at his home in Fairmont. Jerry is survived by his wife, Loretta (Irene) of Fairmont, son Doug (Paula) Sievert of Green Bay, WI; daughters Sharon Buck of Prior Lake, MN; Bed (Dick) Christensen of Waukee, IA; Karla Sievert of Fairmont, NE; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Sisters, Betty Pokorney of Omaha, NE and Arlene Young of Valley, NE as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Dean, his son, Charles; granddaughter, Shelly; and great-granddaughter Baby Taylor. Memorial services were held at the Fairmont Community Church on April 19, with Pastor Mary Jensen of Springview officiating. Recorded musical selections for the service were "Good-bye My Lover," "Angels Among Us" and "Fly with the Angels." Honorary bearers were Spencer D. Martin, Jason L. Smith, Clinton E. Smith, Karl C. Sievert, Richard K. Christensen, Ryan K. Christensen and Robert Doubeck. Private family committal of ashes were held at the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby.
