He married his second wife, Virginia Johnson in Nov. 1972 while in the Navy in Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island. She was born Aug. 13, 1941 and died April 25, 1997 of Hendricks, MN. Gerald was educated in Brookings and Custer, SD. He was a US Navy veteran. He served for 16 years. In the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War with the Fighting Seabee's. From 1960 to 1964 he served in Japan. From 1964 to 1966 he served in Fallon, Nev. From 1966 to 1968 he served in the Great Lakes Naval Base in Chicago, Ill. and in Ft. Eustis, VA from 1968 to 1971. He was discharged Nov 15, 1976. He retired in 1979 and he and his 2nd wife, Virginia, moved to Elkton, SD where they opened Ward's Country Corner. His brother, Donald Ward joined him as a partner. In 1984 they moved to Hendricks, MN. He was a member of the Elkton American Legion Post. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing.
