Read More	CLOVER, S.C. ~ Gerald Neill "Catfish" Adams, 78, of Clover, S.C., died Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Born in Clover, on June 23, 1934, he was the son of the late Elias Hope Adams and Helen Bowman Adams Deaton. In addition to his parents, Jerry is preceded in death by his stepfather, Odis Deaton; his brother, Samuel L. Adams; and his faithful and beloved black lab, Ben. A 1954 graduate of Clover High, Jerry worked as a salesman for Holsum Bakery in Gastonia for 18 years, as an assistant manager of Community Cash Grocery in Clover for 17 years and as a custodian at Clover Middle School for 12 years. An avid sports fan, he played football for Clover High, coached Little League football and officiated many games. A 1976 newspaper clipping of Clover football standouts stated: "One of the most popular athletes to ever wear the Blue Eagle's uniform was Jerry Adams, a guard, better known in Western York County as 'Catfish'." A fond memory and proud moment was his being selected to play in the 1953 Shrine Bowl. This visit to Shriners' Hospital was a significant memory for him, which perhaps influenced his lifetime passion for helping others. A member of the Clover Optimist Club for more than 50 years, he enjoyed working with youths and accepted many positions of leadership, including receiving Optimist of the Year awards. In 1964, he was humbled to receive the Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award for "his great contribution above and beyond his role as an Optimist." Receiving this award left Catfish speechless, a rare occurrence. However, later he responded, "Anne is a wonderful woman and very understanding. I don't think the award I just won would have been possible if it weren't for her." He was also a member of the South Carolina Masons and received his 50-year lifetime membership pin. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clover for more than 55 years, where he taught Sunday school, served on and led numerous committees and volunteered with youths. In recent years, he enjoyed the fellowship of the United Methodist Men and the Men's Prayer Breakfast service work. Jerry was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. A tremendous joy in his life was the relationships he had with his immediate and extended family, as well as his multitude of friends. Regarding his long marriage, Jerry was once quoted in a newspaper interview about his hometown as saying, "… the best place in the world to find a wife is Clover." A service to celebrate Jerry's life will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at First United Methodist Church of Clover, followed by interment at Lakeview Memory Gardens, York. M.L.
