Pilcher Killed In Crash Gerald Robert Pilcher, 725 Morrison, a 27 year old veteran of 28 missions over Germany, was killed a few minutes after midnight Friday when the car in which he was riding crashed into the rear of a trailer-truck stopped near the Broadway and Barney intersection at Salina. Injured in the crash were Emmerson M. Nichols, 1205 North Ninth, and Robert J. Hall, 124 South Eleventh, driver of the car which belonged to Nichols, all of Salina. Wallace G. Bulkley, McPherson, driver of the truck, told police that he had pulled up to the curb to repair a blown-out exhaust gasket and heard the collision just when he stopped. Police reports of the crash show that the automobile struck the rear part of the transport, shoving it into the rear part of another similar truck which was parked at the curb, approximately 25 feet forward. The car was towed to a parking lot across from the city hall, and the truck was removed from the scene, but police records do not show where it was taken. The truck belongs to Harry Sprague, McPherson. Pilcher was a transport driver for the Sid bacon Motor Company. Born April 8, 1919 at Glasco, the son of Mrs. Agnes Pilcher, he was a veteran of more than three years military service, having served with army air forces from Feb. 5, 1942 until Sept. 8, 1945, during which time he completed 28 missions over Germany as a gunner. He was assigned to the fourth bomb squadron, 34th bombardment group, eighth air force. He was a member of the Catholic church and the American Legion. Besides his mother, he is survived by two brothers and four sisters, Earl B. Pilcher, Mrs. Lela Clark, Mrs. Thelma Cope, and Miss Maxine Pilcher, all of Salina; L.R. Pilcher, Glasco, and Mrs. Marjorie Daniels, Seabright, N.J. Funeral services for Gerald R. Pilcher were held Tuesday morning at 9 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Salina, with Msgr. John A. Duskie in charge. Pallbearers were Paul Dillon, Francis Dillon, Raymond Richard, Roy Streckfus, George Mullen and Bernard Thielan. Interment was in the St. Mary's cemetery at Glasco, with joint graveside services by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
