Description	:	Gerald R. Smith, 85, of Batavia, Iowa died Thursday, July 1, 2010 at home. A celebration of his life was held at 2:30 p.m. today at Calvary Baptist Church , with Rev. Tom Shipley officiating. Burial was in Smith Cemetery, north of Batavia, with military rites accorded be American Legion o.B. Nelson Post No. 3 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Walter B. Smith, 85, of Batavia, Iowa died Thursday, July 1, 2010 at home. A celebration of his life was held at 2:30 p.m. today at Calvary Baptist Church , with Rev. Tom Shipley officiating. Mr. Smith was born February 10, 1925, in Wapello County, the son of Raphael E. and Mary Neva (Miller) Smith. He married Marlys Sommer June 20, 1959, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Throughtout the years, Mr. Smith had worked at J.I. Case Co. and operated a Standard Gas Station. He also worked at Winger-Boss Co. of Ottumwa, and retired from Dexter Company of Fairfield, Iowa. In retirement, he opened a tire business out of his garage in Batavia. Mr. Smith was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Navy from 1942-1946. Survivors include his Wife; nine children, Jerry L. Smith (Sue), of Davenport, Carol (Carl) Kopp of Bloomfield, IA, Mary McLaughlin (Randy) of Alabama, Laura (Robert) Jones of Maine, L.P. Smith of Hayesville, Luallen(Randy) Dodson of Davenport, Iowa, Lloyd E. (Jean) Smith of Birmingham, Iowa, Leo R. (Tammy) Smith and Lanette (Weldon) Oliver both of Texas; 21 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and six siblings, Don Smith of Douds, Lulu Belle Collett of Indiana, Alice Lee of North Liberty, Iowa, Dorothy Bates of Fort Madison, Virginia Faulkner of Missouri, and Anna Marie Miller of Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Jane E. Cox; and three brothers, Dale, Floyd, and Keith Smith.
