Gerald Simon Schaefer was born November 14, 1937 in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Raymond and Ruth (Bohlman) Schaefer. He attended rural school in Reynolds, ND and later moved with his family to Grand Forks, where he graduated from Central High School in 1956. He graduated from Aaker's Business School and was a lifelong insurance agent with Schaefer Insurance Agency of Grand Forks. Gerald married Rita M. Kuznia on July 29, 1972 in St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Stephen, MN. They settled in a house down the street from his mother Ruth in the Lincoln Drive neighborhood in Grand Forks. He is survived by his wife, Rita; a son, Jason; a daughter, Megan, both of Grand Forks; brothers, Raymond (Iva), Grand Forks, David (Carole), Madison, WI, Michael (Paulette) Grand Forks; sisters, Maryann Johnson, Reno, NV, Carole Hart, Hughsville, MD, and Jane (Ronald) McGlynn, Suprise, AZ. Despite being scattered around the country, his brothers and sisters kept close contact and were especially supportive in his final years. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, John and brothers-in-law, Frank Hart and Wilbur Johnson. His brother, Jackie, said it best, "He had a heart of Gold." The family extends their gratitude to the staff of Valley 4000. The family requests that memorials be given to the Eden Program of Valley 4000. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2007 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service and a 4:30 p.m. rosary service in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Wednesday. Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Reynolds, ND.
