Gerald W. "Jerry" Snelgrove, husband to Patricia Snelgrove, died June 26, 2015. He is lovingly survived by his son, Tony Snelgrove (Vette) and daughter Andrea Snelgrove-Moore (Joe); three sisters, Sandra Chatten (Art), Margaret Taylor (Charles), and Dianne Smith (Steve); four grandchildren, Tyrus Snelgrove (Danielle), Sydney Hartmann, Austin Snelgrove, and Peyton Hartmann; one great-grandchild, Sophia; two step-children, Heather Weese Benton (Larry) and William Weese; two step-grandchildren, Seth and Lydia; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Brenda M. Snelgrove, his infant son, Michael Wayne Snelgrove, and his sister, Bettye S. Fink. Family, friends, church and his community were Jerry's love, joy, dedication, and legacy. Anyone who met him or knew him would attest to that truth. From his early years of working in the fields with his siblings, to driving a professional truck, and creating a business, Jerry respected the craftsmanship of hard work and was resolute in his devotion to loyalty, dignity and integrity. His reputation often preceeded him and customers quickly discovered a loyal businessman who treated them like family. He passionately treasured his family and was a devoted husband, Daddy and was affectionately known as "Granddaddy Jerry" and "Gi Gi". He loved moments spent creating memories with his family and was a faithful brother to his sisters and a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews. Born on November 13, 1943 in Lexington County, Jerry was one of five children born to the late Carey M. "Wes" and Louise Rauch Snelgrove. A lifelong resident of Gilbert, he graduated Gilbert High School in 1961 where he played basketball, drove a school bus, and participated in FFA. Prior to establishing Snelgrove Memorials in 1969, Jerry worked as a Professional Truck Driver until 1993 and was a member of the AM Trucking Association. He was Motor Car Journal's Rookie of the Year in 1974 and also won the SC State Truck Rodeo. He competed in the National Truck Rodeo, placing 2nd overall. He was a faithful and dedicated member of Beulah United Methodist Church where he served on various councils and committees (Youth Council, Administrative Board and Pastor/Parish Relations) and was the founding member of the United Methodist Men's Club, the Board of Trustees, and the Finance Board. In addition to serving as the Building Fund Treasurer, Jerry was the Cemetery Chairman and was a lifelong Sunday School Teacher to many. In his community, Jerry was the respectful owner of Snelgrove Memorials and active president of the Hollow Creek Ruritan Club and was instrumental in establishing the Hollow Creek Ruritan Club, the Hollow Creek Volunteer Fire Department, former President of the Hollow Creek Community Center, and the Star Promenade Square Dance Club by becoming the founding member of each organization. He was also a Woodmen of the World and had served as a volunteer fireman. The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the many friends who have blessed them through their actions and prayers, and special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Lexington Medical Center and Fresenius Medical Care (Kidney Clinic) for the care and compassion shown to Jerry. Visitation will be held at Barr-Price Funeral Home, 256 Main Street in Batesburg-Leesville on Tuesday, June 30, 5:00 pm-8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at Beulah United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 1 at 11:00 am with Rev. Tony Rowell officiating. Active and honorary pallbearers will be the Beulah United Methodist Men's Club.
