Description	:	Gerald (Jerry) Wade Preece of Battle Creek, Nebraska and New York City died peacefully December 22, 2012 in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. This occurred with lung failure after an extended battle with a rare form of Blood Lymphoma (Skin Cancer). His closest remaining relatives, his Sister Helene and Brother Tim F. were with him. He will be missed by relatives and friends. Jerry was 81 years old having been born on January 26, 1931 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Dr. Wade Owen Preece of Battle Creek and Waterloo, and Mary Agnes Molumby of Waukon, Iowa. Jerry is the last remaining local descendent in Battle Creek, Nebraska of the extensive Douglass Preece and Mary Agnes Carrabine Preece families who homesteaded in Battle Creek in 1868. Douglass was a Civil War Veteran who marched with General Sherman. Douglass' son Timothy Douglass Preece and Elene Wade Preece were Jerry's grandparents in Battle Creek. Elene was the daughter of Owen E. Wade and Eliza(beth) Connelly Wade of Battle Creek and Norfolk. Tim D. Preece served 25 years as Mayor of the City of Battle Creek and was instrumental in having the Battle Creek High School built during the depression. Elene was the founder of the Battle Creek Public Library and leader of the local women's suffrage movement prior to Congress passing the 19th Amendment in 1919. Jerry attended primary and junior high school at Sacred Heart School in Waterloo and graduated from West Waterloo Public High School in Waterloo in 1949. He graduated from Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana in 1953 earning a B.A. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps primarily stationed in Germany. After service in the Army, he did graduate work at the University of California in Berkeley, California. He initially entered the journalism profession in California newspapers, but later he served for 18 years as Managing Editor of the nationally recognized "Hotel and Travel" Index. This famous index was published by Ziff-Davis Publications in Los Angeles whose offices, including Jerry's, were subsequently moved to New York City. Before the internet replaced the written index, the index was the bible of travel agents, the massive book being seen on every major agent's desk throughout the United States. Jerry had a great sense of humor and was a dedicated world traveler having visited many distant parts of the glove including all areas of Europe, Egypt, Burma, India, Japan and the entire Silk Road of China. He was an accomplished artist and devotee of the arts spending considerable time in various world and New York City museums and art galleries. He also particularly enjoyed the New York Philharmonic and other internationally famous orchestras and musical artists at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York City. But countering his love of the fine arts was his devotion to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. Jerry inherited the historic 120 year old Preece home at the corner of Preece and Main Street in Battle Creek in which he made major renovations--admired not only by friends and relatives but also by decorators. He divided his retirement years between living in Battle Creek and New York City depending upon the seasons. He is survived by his sister, Helene M. McCormack of Camarillo, California whose husband Andrew passed away in 2005 , his brother Tim Preece of Danville, California whose wife Maryanne passed away in 2004, his aunt Heidi (Mrs. John) Preece of Hamilton Square, New Jersey, his father's first cousins Mrs. Antoinette O'Keefe Stoner of Waterloo and Mrs. Lela Preece Glaze of Mountain View, MO as well as by ten nieces and nephews and eight grand nieces and nephews, all for the most part living in various cities in California. He is also survived by seven first cousins from the various locations in the Mid-West.
