Read More	Geraldine Mae "Jerri" Hand, 97, of Park Vista Retirement Community in Camanche, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 6, 2022, in the comfort of her home. The family sincerely and gratefully thank the caring staff at Park Vista Retirement Community. She developed strong friendships with residents and staff members in her three years living there. She was known for her witty remarks and will be missed at her dining table at Park Vista. Jerri was born December 6, 1924 at home in Clinton, Iowa to LeRoy and Katherine (Bolte) Wright. As the oldest of eight children, she grew up fast and took on many adult responsibilities at an early age. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1942 at a time when a high school diploma was not considered essential for girls. She was united in marriage to Joseph Hand on August 30, 1944, at St. Irenaeus Catholic Church in Clinton. She later told her children that, "your dad and I just clicked!" The couple spent their first year of marriage in Santa Barbara, California, where Joe was serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. She had fond memories of their California adventures. After Joe was discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard, they returned to Clinton, Iowa, where Jerri was a homemaker and Joe worked in a factory. Joe wanted to be his own boss so in 1950 they began farming, first as tenants, then eventually purchasing their own farm north of DeWitt in 1961. The "town girl" moved to the country. Jerri became a true partner with Joe in growing their farming business. Together they survived the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. She loved the farms and was proud of what they accomplished together. Joe and Jerry had three children. When the children were older Jerri went to work as an office manager at Frank's Lumber Company. When an opportunity came up for an administrative assistant at Mockridge Law Office, Jerri jumped at the chance for this new challenge. The law office later became the Condon,Peavey, Schirman Law Firm where Jerri served as legal secretary for more than 25 years. After her retirement, she became active as a volunteer for the MercyOne auxiliary. She received recognition for more than 1000 hours of service to the auxiliary. She was most proud of expanding the Mercy gift shop to serve patients, family and staff at Mercy. She had an eye for decorating and helped customers with ideas on how the items could be used in their home. Joe preceded her in death in 1991. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Charles (Rebecca), Betty, twin brothers, Kenneth (Sharon) and Robert (Leona), and Thomas. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the service time of 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 14, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 in the church, the Rev. Fr. Kenneth E. Kuntz officiating. The family requests that masks be worn at the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family also expresses gratitude to The Genesis Visiting Nurse Home Hospice.
