Description	:	Gerry was born on July 30, 1925 to Severnis and Luella (Purcella) O´Hara in DeSmet, SD. She graduated from Butler High School in 1943 and attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen. She began her teaching career in a one room school house in Butler, SD and continued to teach in Clear Lake, Benson, MN, and Brookings, SD. She was united in marriage to Phillip Devine, Jr., at Sacred Heart Church in Aberdeen, South Dakota on June 13, 1950. Read More	Gerry was born on July 30, 1925 to Severnis and Luella (Purcella) O´Hara in DeSmet, SD. She graduated from Butler High School in 1943 and attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen. She began her teaching career in a one room school house in Butler, SD and continued to teach in Clear Lake, Benson, MN, and Brookings, SD. She was united in marriage to Phillip Devine, Jr., at Sacred Heart Church in Aberdeen, South Dakota on June 13, 1950. They farmed in the Wakonda area and Gerry began teaching at Wakonda Public School in 1952. She taught elementary school, primarily fifth grade, and directed one-act plays and declam until her retirement in 1989. Her husband Phillip died in 1972 of cancer. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Education at The University of South Dakota in August 1966 and received a Master of Arts degree in July 1975. She was a founding member of the Vermillion Valley Council of the International Reading Association in 1977. She acted as Chairman of the Young Author´s Extravaganza for the Vermillion Valley Council for a number of years and was instrumental in the South Dakota Reading Council´s adoption of Young Author´s Extravaganza as a statewide project. Gerry was the recipient of the Literacy Award as presented by the South Dakota Reading Council in 1989 and was a member of the International Reading Association´s President´s Club for many years. She was a member of the Board of Directors South Dakota Education Association serving as President of SDEA/Retired from 1990-1997, recognized in the Who´s Who Among America´s Teachers, and was presented the Annie D. Tallent Award in 1992 by the South Dakota Education Association. She was also a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls and Catholic Daughters of the Americas St. Patricia Court 271. She also volunteered at Sioux Valley Hospital as a Eucharistic Minister for many years. She is survived by four daughters: Kelley Devine of Sioux Falls; Cathy (Darby) Ganschow of Wakonda; Kaye (Scott) Kennedy of Beresford; Pat (Bryan) Lund of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren: Tim (Stephanie) Ganschow, John Ganschow, Catie Ganschow, Erin Kennedy, MaryEllen Kennedy, Jackson Lund, Joseph Lund, and one great-grandchild, Connor Ganschow; a sister, Gertrude Coyne of Van Nuys, California; a brother, Ray O´Hara of Caitic, California; a sister-in-law, Alice O´Hara of Simi Valley, California; sisters-in-law: Monica Ballard and Veronica Heimes of Vermillion; Mary Ellen Powell and Madeline Devine of Sioux Falls; and a host of extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a brother, Clair. She touched thousands of lives throughout the years through her commitment to children and was honored to call each student her friend.
