GREENVILLE - Dr. Gerda Prevost McCahan, Furman University professor of psychology emeritus and the first woman to serve as chairman of the Furman faculty, died August 17, 1992, after an extended illness. McCahan, 72, taught at Furman for 28 years before retiring in 1990. She was also a practicing clinical psychologist and a well known speaker on such topics as dual-career marriages, stress and burnout. "Gerda McCahan was one of the most outstanding professors who ever taught at Furman," Furman President John E. Johns said. "She was loved by students. And she was the first woman to serve as chairman of the faculty. Her death is a great loss to the university community and the Greenville community." McCahan was a native of Greenville and a daughter of the late Marshall Blair and Gerda Luyties Prevost. A graduate of Greenville High School and Furman University, she received her MA and PhD degrees in psychology from Columbia University. In 1965, she was named a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. Although she began teaching at Furman in 1945, her teaching career was interrupted when she married US Air Force Chaplain Dr. George R. McCahan. In 1963 they returned to Greenville and she rejoined the Furman faculty. During her tenure, she served as chairman of the psychology department and director of the Child and Family Studies Institute. "She was a teacher of extraordinary skill and sensitivity and a personal friend and professional mentor of scores of Furman graduates and university colleagues," said Dr. Elaine Nocks, current chair of the psychology department. After returning to Greenville, she and her husband were associated in a clinical and counseling practice, and she served as a consulting psychologist with the Marshall I. Pickens Hospital Children's Program. She was a member of the boards of advisory committees for numerous local groups, including the Junior League, Piedmont Council for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect, Presbyterian Counseling Service, Greenville County Mental Retardation Commission and Furman-Greenville Fine Arts Series. She was a member of numerous professional associations. She was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Jane E. Mather of Chicago; two sons, David S. McCahan of Lafayette, California and retired US Army Col. Alan R. McCahan of Greensboro, North Carolina; and a brother, Herman Prevost. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Buncombe United Methodist Church with burial in Christ Church Episcopal Churchyard. Published in The Greenville News, August 18, 1992
