Funeral services are 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 6th, 2016 at Zion American Lutheran Church, Eureka, with Pastor Ryan Gage leading the service. Organist will be Ronda Lapp and the congregation will sing “Great is Thy Faithfulness”, “What a Friend We have in Jesus”, “Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound”, and Blessed Assurance”. Gerhard Hoffman, son of Elizabeth (Spitzer) and Fred Hoffman, was born May 4, 1923 at his family’s farm 10 miles NE of Long Lake, SD. He attended Rural School at Harrison TWSHP #1. Gerhard married Ella Rau on November 9, 1947, at Hope Lutheran Church of Long Lake. They settled on Gerhard’s farmstead and remained living on the farm until October 1984 when they semi-retired and moved into Eureka. Gerhard was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church, rural Long Lake and also St. James Lutheran Church in Leola, where he taught Sunday School for 20 years and served on Church Council. He then moved to Eureka in October 1984, and was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church. Gerhard enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, playing cards, telling stories and woodworking. He built many cabinets and did lots of carpentry work over the years. Gerhard is survived by Ella, his wife of 68 years; three sons Kenny (Lana) Hoffman of Bismarck, ND, and Rodney (Donna) Hoffman and Glen Hoffman of Long Lake; one sister Violet Hoffman of Jefferson, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Preceding Gerhard in death was his father on August 29, 1948, his mother on September 8, 1968, four brothers, and two sisters. Honorary bearers are Gerhard’s granddaughters—Amanda Walberg and Krista Murray, grandson’s spouses – Dannica Hoffman, Cherish Hoffman, Stacey Hoffman, Brittany Walberg, his great grandchildren—Easton, Avery, Makenna, Jacob, and Keera; as well as his special friends—George and Judy Hulscher and Bob and Lindy Roggenkamp. Casketbearers are Gerhard’s grandsons—Kyle Hoffman of San Diego, CA, Blake Hoffman of Brandon, SD, Ryan Hoffman of Fargo, ND, Darren Hoffman of Maple Grove, MN, Jeremy Walberg of Aberdeen, SD, and Sean Murray of Bismarck.
