She received her education in the Luxemburg area schools. She married Norbert N. Wilwert on Jan. 5, 1953, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg; he preceded her in death on Dec. 5, 2005. She was a member of St. Patrick's Parish in Epworth and its Altar and Rosary Society. Germaine enjoyed fishing and gardening. She was a seamstress and quilter and an avid Cubs fan. Surviving are five children, Cheryl (Bill) Kramer, of Epworth, Janet (Jack) Zalaznik, of Dyersville, Sue (Jerry) Ostwinkle, of Epworth, Peggy Wilwert (friend, Jen Kennedy), of Dubuque, and Steve (Dawn) Wilwert, of Epworth; 12 grandchildren, Jenni (Benji) Heisler, Kelly Kramer, Andy Kramer, Jeff (Brandi) Zalaznik, Jill Zalaznik, Ashlee (Matthew) Then, Jay and Amber Ostwinkle, Brandon, Mitchel, Trevor and Bryce Wilwert; three great-grandchildren, Mia Wilwert, Hailey Zalaznik and Henry Heisler; and two sisters, Virgie (Irvin) Singsank, of Luxemburg, and Joan (Jim) Esch, of Dyersville. She also was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Leo, Art, Rich and Ralph Steffen; a sister, Marie Winter; and a brother-in-law, Leon Gotto.
