There will be a funeral service on Friday, August 18, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Reformed Church in Hull. Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Gerrit James was born on September 5, 1923, at Ocheyedan, Iowa, the son of Harry & Jeanette (Riemersma) Sikma. He was raised at Ocheyedan, where he attended a country school. On October 13, 1948, he married Albertha Statema at Ireton, Iowa. They farmed at Ireton for a short time, and then he served in the United States Army. They then made their home in Sibley, Iowa, where he drove a Standard Oil truck. "Jim" was recalled into the military, so they moved to Fort Sill, OK. After his discharge, they settled at Hull, where he drove another Standard Oil truck. Later, he was employed at Gerb's Hardware for many years, and he also worked at K & O Manufacturing, both in Hull. In retirement, he had a variety of part-time jobs. "Betty" passed away on November 29, 2003 in Rock Valley, Iowa. On June 22, 2004, he married Gerdena Dokter Bomgaars in Hull, where they continued to live. On July 11 of this year, he became a resident of Pleasant Acres. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Janet and Lois; and son, Gary; eleven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; six brothers; John, Harold, Bill, Roger, Robert and Rodrick; two brothers-in-law, Mike and Clarence; and four sisters-in-law, Geneva; Priscilla; Joan and Iola. He is also survived by Gerden'a family, Gladys; and Nelva June; a son and his wife, Arlin Lee; ten grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Gary; and two sisters, Jeanette and Gertrude. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law; a step-grandson; a sister, Jacoba; and seven brothers-in-law.
