Read More	Gerrit Veldboom Dies in Hunting Accident Friday evening the town of Sioux Center was exceedingly shocked and grieved to hear of the untimely and accidental death of Gerrit Veldboom Jr., "Pick" as he was familiarly known. On Thursday morning he had left his home telling Mrs. Veldboom that he was going hunting and would return later on the forenoon. Mrs. Veldboom became alarmed when he did not return and made inquiries concerning him but friends assured her that "Pick" was well able to take care of himself and that he probably had gone to Sioux City for supplies or that he was in some manner detained. He did not return that night and Mrs. Veldboom's anxiety increased with sleepless hours of the night. Friends kept on assuring her that Mr. Veldboom would return but at about 5 o'clock P.M. it had been decided to send out searching parties when word reached the home that Mr. Veldboom's body had been discovered lying near a fence in a slough about two miles southwest of Sioux Center. Evidently Mr. Veldboom had attempted to crawl through a wire fence and in doing so the shot-gun which he carried was discharged accidently. The shot struck just below the heart and death was instantaneous as was evidenced by the cigar which he had been smoking still lying on his chest. A coroners inquest was held which declared that Mr. Veldboom had met his death accidentally. Mr. Veldboom was born at Rock Valley, Iowa, 36 years ago. When he was 21 years old he joined the Canadian army and served as a volunteer with the Canadian forces during the World War. He had a natural inclination for mechanics and at the age of 25 entered the garage business at Sioux Center. Some few years later his father, Gerrit Veldboom, Sr., purchased the interest of Herman Juffer, who was a partner of Gerrit Veldboom, Jr., and father and son were associated in the business until the death of the father in February of this year. Since that time the business has been conducted by Mr. Veldboom, Jr. Mr. Veldboom was one of active business men of Sioux Center. He was a kindly man. He was ever ready to lend a helping hand and perhaps no man in Sioux Center had more friends than he. He was a volunteer fireman and a member of the American Legion. The funeral was under the auspices of the local American Legion Post. A delegation of the American Legion Post of Rock Valley was also present at the funeral. Surviving Mr. Veldboom are his widow, son George, his mother, a brother and a sister. He was the ninth of eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Veldboom, Sr. to be taken by death. The heartfelt sympathy of the community is with the sorrowing family. The funeral services were held on Tuesday at which the Rev's. J. Colenbrander of Orange City and L. A. Brunsting officiated. In his sermon Rev. Colenbrander recalled the fact that in the sixteen years of his ministry he conducted seven funeral services for members of the Veldboom family. -Obituary from the Sioux Center News (10/13/1932)
