Description	:	Gravestone is missing; footstone still stands. The date of death is from an earlier inventory. Age of 60 years from inventory contradicts birth record in Trumbull Congregational Church. The History of Rutland County states that Gershom Lake arrived in the Castleton area (probably from Woodbury, Connecticut) in 1771, just one year after the first few settlers. He cleared land from the forest and built the second log house in the settlement. Later he and wife, Seviah, also built the second frame house. His land was on a hill south and east of the village. As a young man in Connecticut, Lake enlisted in Col. David Wooster's Company which was organized to invade Canada during the French and Indian Wars. He is also listed in various Revolutionary War rolls for service on and off throughout the war. After the battle of Hubbardton, the British impressed both him and his oxen. In 1784, Gershom Lake became a charter member of the Congregational Church of Castleton. He is buried in the church cemetery.
