Mrs. Steele died in a Quincy, Ill. hospital July 31 where she had been since July 17. The daughter of Samuel Curtis and Nettie May Atkinson Baker, she was born in Tipton March 2, 1898. She was married to Don Steele. He died in 1957. Before moving to New York City, she lived in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City where she was active in the Church Women United and the Eastern Star. With her husband they operated the Steele Brokerage in New York with branches in Philadelphia and Washington. In 1944 Mrs. Steele was named by "Coronet" magazine as one of the 10 most important women contributing to the war effort. As a member of the Red Cross, she trained classes of up to 1,000 volunteers, started the Red Cross blood bank in the United States, organized the search for World War II refugees and originated POW packages which later became CARE. She was in charge of Red Cross conferences, dinners and benefits, including huge rallies at Madison Square Garden and city-wide fund raising campaigns in New york. Mrs. Steele was an active member of Norman Vincent Peale's Marble church in New York, was vice-president of the Marble Church club, chairman of the Marble Eight group, and treasurer of the Sunday school. She was a corresponding secretary for the Women's National council, a member of the United Women and volunteer chairman for the American Foundation of Religion and Psychiatry. Mrs. Steele worked on the Protestant Motion Picture council as a critic and on the planning committee of the Japanese International Christian University Foundation. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Roy William Baker. She is survived by several cousins living in the Cedar county area.
